Event Alert!

AAAS Science and Human Rights Coalition Launch Begins Tomorrow

Over 200 scientists and representatives of various scientific organizations have registered to attend the launch of the AAAS Science and Human Rights Coalition scheduled for January 14-16 in downtown Washington, DC.  SPSSI Policy Coordinator Chris Woodside will be on hand for the event, and plans to report back via the SPSSI Policy News Feed in days to come.

Opening night of the Launch will feature three distinguished speakers, Mary Robinson, former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, and former President of Ireland, Sidney Verba, Chair of the Committee on Human Rights of the National Academy of Sciences, and Research Professor of Government at Harvard University.

In the two days of activities that follow, attendees will have an opportunity to learn more about the mission and structure of the Coalition, its areas of interest and work, and how scientific associations such as SPSSI, as well as individual scientists can become a part of the initiative.  Launch participants will hear about the varied contributions that science and scientists can make to human rights, and will have the opportunity to equip their scientific associations with information and tools designed to aid there future involvement in the human rights cause.

Please click here to review a one-pager description of the Coalition and its purpose.  SPSSI plans to use the Launch event as an opportunity to explore its own future participation in AAAS efforts of this nature.  For more information, please stay tuned to the Policy Feed.
