Deconstructing Privilege: Teaching and Learning as Allies in the Classroom

by Kim Case
2013: Routledge

Deconstructing Privilege: Teaching and Learning as Allies in the Classroom explores best practices for teaching and learning about various forms of systemic group privilege by laying the theoretical foundation for a model of privilege studies pedagogy and also provides scholarship and practical applications to aid faculty in becoming effective allies to students in the classroom. Three sections of the volume address: 1) transformation privilege studies pedagogy; 2) intersectional approaches to teaching and learning about privilege; and 3) classroom strategies and applications for teaching about privilege.

This collection:

  • provides a model of privilege studies pedagogy for effective teaching and learning about privilege;
  • develops an inclusive privilege studies that incorporates multiple forms of privilege (rather than only white privilege);
  • encourages an intersectional approach to teaching and learning about privilege; and
  • promotes an interdisciplinary privilege studies that calls for “privilege studies across the curriculum.”

Us Plus Them: Tapping the Positive Power of Difference

by Todd L. Pittinski
2012: Harvard Business Press Books

In fact, recognizing difference as a positive force can bring astonishing value to even the most diverse organizations. In "Us Plus Them," leadership scholar Todd Pittinsky introduces a groundbreaking new science of diversity that: (1) Debunks the assumption that wherever there is difference there will be inherent tension and animosity, (2) Challenges the effectiveness of our standard attempts to fight prejudice and combat hate in our schools and workplaces, our civic and religious lives, and (3) Reveals how we benefit from the mixing of different ethnic, racial, national, social, and religious groups in a globalized world.

The Analyst in the Inner City: Race, Class, and Culture Through a Psychoanalytic Lens
Second Edition

by Neil Altman
2009 Routledge Relational Perspectives Book Series

In 1995, Neil Altman did what few psychoanalysts did or even dared to do: He brought the theory and practice of psychoanalysis out of the cozy confines of the consulting room and into the realms of the marginalized, to the very individuals whom this theory and practice often overlooked. In doing so, he brought
together psychoanalytic and social theory, and examined how divisions of race, class and culture reflect and influence splits in the developing self, more often than not leading to a negative self image of the “other” in an increasingly polarized society.
