SPSSI Internship Opportunities

We have year round opportunities for graduate student and undergraduate student internships at the SPSSI Central Office in Washington DC.

What Interns Do At SPSSI

Interns assist SPSSI staff on various projects. Depending on the intern's training and skills, the time of the year and what projects are on the "front burner," interns may work with us on a range of policy, communications, or administrative projects, such as:

  • organizing Capitol Hill briefings and conferences on specific issues;
  • researching or preparing fact sheets that analyze explain key data about various social justice issues;
  • providing research and/or editorial assistance needed to prepare materials for publication;
  • representing SPSSI at Washington-area seminars and other events;
  • researching or writing new content for SPSSI website;
  • posting and editing content on SPSSI website
  • preparing e-newsletter
  • assisting with planning for SPSSI conventions
  • communicating with SPSSI members on various issues
  • assisting association management and administration tasks

Interns can count on being given substantive assignments at least 50% of their time at SPSSI, but they must also willingly help with clerical work—answering phones, mailings, copying documents, etc.

Internship Information and Application Guidelines

  • SPSSI internships are normally unpaid positions.
  • Interns must have completed at least two years of college.
  • The usual internship is for about 10 to 12 weeks (i.e., roughly corresponding to the academic semester or summer vacation period.)
  • We generally expect interns to work a 30-35 hour week, but we sometimes make exceptions.
  • We consider that interns are members of SPSSI’s staff while they are here, and we include them in virtually all our activities.
  • SPSSI is located on Capitol Hill, just east of Union Station, and walking distance from the U.S. Capitol, the Library of Congress, and the Supreme Court.

To apply, send a brief letter describing your interest and specifying the approximate dates of your availability, along with a resume, to spssi@spssi.org. Please include the words "Internship Application" in the subject line of your email.
