Gordon Allport Intergroup Relations Prize Selection

The Gordon Allport Intergroup Relations Prize honors the memory of the late Dr. Gordon W. Allport, a founder and past president of SPSSI. The prize was funded for five years (1980-1984 awards) by the Gordon Allport Memorial Fund of Harvard University.

The Prize is awarded annually and carries an award of $1,000 "for the best paper or article of the year on intergroup relations"--a field about which Professor Allport cared deeply. The research area of intergroup relations includes such dimensions as age, sex, and socio-economic status, as well as race. Originality of the contribution, whether theoretical or empirical, is given special weight. The committee will often select one or two honorable mentions recipients, who receive a certificate, but no financial award. Entries can be papers published during the award year or unpublished manuscripts. The competition is open to non-members, as well as members; graduate students are especially encouraged to submit entries. An individual or group may make only one submission for a SPSSI paper award program from amongst the Allport, Klineberg, and Dissertation Awards per year.

The selection committee consists of three or more members appointed by the President. Details can be found here.
