SPSSI-New York Regional Group

Harold Takooshian, Fordham University

Since it formed in 1984, SPSSI-New York has hosted 10-20 local activities per year. Some recent examples appear at www.spssi.org/ny

In summer of 2025, SPSSI-NY hosted five diverse activities.

On June 20, Drs. Pascal E. Sauvayre and John L. Dimino offered a forum on John’s recent book on “the use of mythology in psychotherapy.”

As part of a Fordham seminar on the social psychology of city life, local SPSSI-NY members were invited to four walking tours of ever-changing Manhattan landmarks, led by Gothamist Lee Michael Klein: (1) On July 2, the Lincoln Center for Performing Arts, which houses 30 art forms. (2) On July 9, the sprawling, 7-acre Javits Center greenroof and greenhouse in the center of Manhattan. (3) On July 16, the United Nations and 42nd Street (Grand Central and Times Square). (4) On July 25, the Oculus, Wall Street and 9-11 Memorial park.

In general, these SPSSI forums achieve multiple goals. They give SPSSI experts a platform to address colleagues and the public on timely issues, provide SPSSI colleagues with City-wide fellowship, offer traveling SPSSI experts a City-wide audience and, not least of all, introduce students to SPSSI.  From 1998-2025, at least 357 people (mostly students) joined SPSSI at a local meeting, most recently the five Hunter College student officers who hosted SPSSI’s “Mentor panel” on May 3: Angie Lee, Jasmiina Rovshanova, Sumaya Hafizur, Willow Perryman, Ashley Ngo.

Looking ahead, SPSSI-NY welcomes program suggestions. For questions, contact: takoosh@aol.com
