SPSSI-New York Regional GroupHarold Takooshian, PhD, & Dinesh Sharma, PhD, Fordham University
Since 1984, the SPSSI New York regional group has hosted 10 or more activities each year for our 400+ regional members and their guests to gather. Thanks to Justin Belsley at SPSSI, many of these diverse activities now appear online at www.spssi.org/ny . Following COVID-19 in March of 2020, fewer people have been attending local activities. In spring of 2026, SPSSI had another series of diverse activities. On March 27 at Fordham University, Dr. Dinesh Sharma hosted a hybrid forum on “Daughters of the dynasties, comparing women’s leadership in USA, China, India. This featured four panelists: Dinesh Sharma, Ying Hong, Britt Romagna, Zara Lowenthal. On April 12 at Fordham, SPSSI-NY partnered with NYSPA to host a hybrid forum on “Addressing the mental health crisis through interstate compact legislation.” The four panelists were Drs. Peggy Brady-Amoon (President of NYSPA), Kathy Keefe-Cooperman, Jerry Grodin, John Northman. On May 9, as part of the 54th Hunter College Psychology Convention, SPSSI offered a one-hour symposium on “The importance of mentors,” where nine noted mentors described their own mentor: Leonard Davidman, Debbie Joffe Ellis, Leo Murillo, Dinesh Sharma, Carolyn Springer, George D. Stokes, Harold Takooshian, Eugen Tarnow, Jason R. Young. One common SPSSI-NY activity is hosting memorials for beloved New York City colleagues such as Jarome S. Bruner (1915-2016) and Olivia J. Hooker (1915-2018). This October 18, 2026, we will host a memorial for Florence L. Denmark (1933-2026). SPSSI-NY welcomes suggestions and local hosts for future activities.
