2017 SPSSI Conference Reflections

Rebecca Covarrubias, Tugçe Kurtis and Michael Zárate

SPSSI Summer Conference 2017 Co-Chairs

Looking back, the theme, “Respect for the rights of others is peace,” of the 2017 SPSSI Conference in Albuquerque NM seems more appropriate than ever. Around this theme, we had 225 sessions and posters, and plenty of time for discussions, interaction, collaboration, and for the development of new ideas among 304 attendees!

Peruse pictures from this years conference on the SPSSI Facebook page and visit the SPSSI YouTube channel for recordings of several sessions and keynote presentations from the conference.

The conference seemed to be a wonderful combination of new and established scholars, community leaders, and international perspectives. This was evident across a variety of formats, including our invited sessions. We had a number of invited non-SPSSI members present their work and, with that, they brought in new ideas and perspectives. One goal with our invited sessions was to have a mix of research and application in multiple formats, including a town hall, symposia, lectures, and discussions. After all, the goal of good research is to bring about appropriate change. The invited speaker topics ranged from immigration and the effects of immigration policy, police violence, election outcome processes, to decolonizing our own research. We want to thank our invited speakers for facilitating these timely conversations! We hesitate mentioning any one invited speaker because all of the talks we heard were important and compelling.

Save the Date for SPSSI Summer Conference 2018

The energy we saw at this conference excites us to attend the next SPSSI conference in Pittsburgh from June 29 to July 1, 2018! As we continue to learn more about unsettling events unfolding both domestically and internationally, we are reminded of the critical space that SPSSI offers us to come together to address these social issues through research-informed policies and practices.

We hope you stay involved in SPSSI. See you at next year’s conference!
