Lou Medvene

After teaching for 26 years in the department of psychology at Wichita State University Medvene retired this September and is a very active Professor of Psychology, Emeritus.  Medvene’s areas of interest spanned social and community psychology and incorporated research and theory on interpersonal processes in helping and romantic relationships.  His most recent work has focused on the social convoys of older adults and how they are related to quality of life.  As a practitioner of action research Medvene carried out a number of community-based projects including his early work with self-help groups around mental health issues, and his later work promoting the signing of advance directives in community settings and then promoting person-centered caregiving in nursing homes.  He is continuing to teach and carry out research focused on promoting “age-friendly” communities.
