What They Don’t Teach You in Graduate School – 2023 Pre-Conference Sessions

Jacqueline Verrilli, SPSSI GSC Communications Member at Large, The Chicago School of Professional Psychology

The Graduate Student Committee is hosting 3 incredible pre-conference sessions for SPSSI Conference attendees. The theme of these sessions is “What They Don’t Teach You in Graduate School” covering useful information and practical topics to help graduate students navigate the future of Social Psychology and their careers in the discipline.

Rachel Cook has organized a terrific session entitled “Creating and Maintaining Accessible Syllabi.” In this session, Dr. Aaron Richmond will help attendees develop their skills and learn about considerations for accessibility in syllabi for the college classroom. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own syllabus to work on incorporating accessibility considerations during the workshop portion of the session.

Leslie Dunnigan is hosting a moderated Q&A session entitled “What I Wish I Had Known…”.

In this session, a panel of current students of color in graduate programs throughout the US will share their experiences from the perspective of what they wish they had known before starting graduate school. The session will be followed by a cultural wealth activity where students can connect with others. The panelists are Melissa Cantua (California State University, Sacramento) and Richard Chang (University of Nevada, Las Vegas).

Jacqueline (Jackie) Verrilli has created a presentation called “From Ivory Tower to Glass and Steel Highrise.” This session is for those considering a job in industry upon completing their Ph.D. Topics covered will include the differences between CVs and resumes, what to expect in the interviewing process, the types of jobs available, starting your own consultancy, and how to find the role with the right fit. The session will include several exercises and there will be takeaway materials.

We hope you will attend these valuable sessions. There will be a cocktail reception for all those attending the preconference sessions.
