The Interrogation and Troture Controversy: Crisis in Psychology

The Center on Terrorism at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, City University of New York, co-sponsored -- along with SPSSI, five NY State Psychological Association divisions, NY and NJ Chapters of the Association of Black Psychologists, the Psychology Department of John Jay College, and York College -- a day-long conference in New York City on September 12 that focused on the participation of psychologists in detainee interrogations. A distinguished group of scholars and informed observers -- including (pictured below) SPSSI members Susan Opotow (center), Bernice Lott, and Mark Costanzo discussed such important issues as: What should happen when practice standards of civilian professions conflict with priorities of the military? and What constitutes ethical research and consultation on topics related to national security?
