2017 SPSSI Conference Policy Workshop: A One-Day Preconference to Help Students and Scholars Create and Foster Meaningful Collaborations in Policy-Relevant Work

Organizers: Kristen Hackett, SPSSI Graduate Student Committee Chair; Linda Silka, SPSSI Council Member and Policy Committee Chair; and Rich Wiener, SPSSI Secretary/Treasurer and Executive Committee Member

As in past years, SPSSI will be hosting a one-day Policy Workshop that will take place the day before the start of the SPSSI Conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico. This year’s SPSSI Policy Workshop will focus on the theme of creating and fostering collaborations in policy-relevant work. In this workshop, presentations, panels, and breakout activities will focus on the different ways in which students and scholars can create and foster collaborations not just across research/issue areas of interest, but also across different kinds of communities and policy settings, types of stakeholders (e.g., researchers, clinicians, community activists, civil servants), and generations of investigators (e.g., graduate students, early-career scholars, mid-career scholars, senior scholars). The day will culminate with working group sessions in which attendees can join others with similar research/policy interests to discuss and coordinate working toward a concrete collaboration. The workshop will run from 9 am – 5 pm on Thursday, June 22 and will take place at the Hotel Albuquerque (where the SPSSI Conference is also being held). The registration fee is $25 for students and $50 for non-students, which includes the cost of breakfast, lunch, and materials.

Call for Poster Abstracts: New this year, Policy Workshop attendees will have an opportunity to submit an abstract for a policy-focused poster to be displayed during the workshop. Click here to learn more.

You can register for the Policy Workshop Preconference when you register for the conference—there will be an option in the registration system to add the preconference to your "shopping cart."

More information will be posted to this page as the Policy Workshop agenda becomes solidified.

Please note that this Policy Workshop Preconference in Albuquerque is different from the Policy Workshop & Advocacy Day that will be held in August of 2017 in Washington, DC, right before the start of the APA Convention. (That event is being co-sponsored by SPSSI, APA Divisions 27 and 56, the American Psychological Association of Graduate Students, and the APA.) While both events are broadly related to policy, the particular focus of each event is different.
