Pre-Convention LGBTQ Advocacy Workshopon the University of San Francisco Downtown Campus $35 Students This continuing education workshop is designed to help psychologists and graduate students in psychology learn a variety of intermediate-level skills for engaging in LGBTQ advocacy. Upon completing this workshop, participants will be able to: 1. Discuss various pathways by which psychologists can engage in LGBTQ advocacy. 2. Prepare to engage in LGBTQ advocacy in federal and state legislatures. 3. Identify ways they can take action steps to become better and more effective change agents of grassroots community-based advocacy. The workshop includes lectures, experiential activities and group discussions. Registration covers handouts, continental breakfast, and snack; schedule is as follows: 9:00 - 9:30 AM: Registration 9:30 - 10:20 AM: The Role of Advocacy in Professional Life, Dr. Allen Omoto, Claremont Graduate University 10:30 - 11:20 AM: Advocating with APA: Lessons on APA’s Science-Based Lobbying Efforts, Dr. Gabe Twose, APA Public Interest Directorate 11:30 - 12:20 PM: Psychologists as Legislative Advocates, Dr. Judith Glassgold, The Center for Health & Wellbeing at Princeton University 12:20 - 1:50: Lunch on your own (90 minutes) 1:50 - 2:40 PM: Grassroots Community-Based Advocacy: Taking Action as a Psychologist in the Real World, Dr. Anneliese Singh, University of Georgia 2:50 - 3:40 PM: Advocacy as a Scientific-Practitioner, Dr. Adam Fingerhut, Loyola Marymount University 3:50 - 4:40: Reimagining “Enemy Territory”: LGBTQ Scholarship and Activism in Trump’s America, Dr. Patrick Grzanka, University of Tennessee at Knoxville Five (5) Continuing Education Credits are available at an additional cost of $10 for this workshop. Division 44 is approved by the American Psychological Association to offer continuing education for psychologists. Division 44 maintains responsibility for the program and its content.
