SPSSI 2017 Summer Conference

Entre los individuos, como entre las naciones, el repeto al derecho ajeno es la paz (Among individuals, as among nations, respect is [the way to] peace.

SPSSI’s 2017 convention is inspired by the famous lines of Benito Pablo JuÁrez GarcÍa, the first Indigenous President of Mexico in late 19th century: “Entre los individuos, como entre las naciones, el respeto al derecho ajeno es la paz” (Among individuals, as among nations, respect for the rights of others is peace). His counsel remains relevant in today’s social and political climate marked by countless instances of conflict, tension, violence, and intolerance throughout the world. His insight further resonates with SPSSI’s efforts to address “human problems of the group, the community, and nations, as well as the increasingly important problems that have no national boundaries.”

This year’s convention takes place in Albuquerque, New Mexico—desert grounds that embrace a rich history of Native American, Spanish, and Anglo cultures, and an economy influenced by nuclear energy research and mining of natural resources. The site and theme of the convention set the stage for submissions that engage issues of local and global concern. These include but are not limited to: immigration, migration, and displacement; climate change; global sustainability; intergroup conflict and violence; war; human rights; equal access to quality education and healthcare; nationalism; racism; social movements and social change; and strategies for promoting peace, respect, and justice. We invite you to consider the theme broadly and submit work that addresses ways in which psychological theory, research, practice, and pedagogy can contribute to efforts in the interest of global peace, respect, and social justice.

The one-day 2017 SPSSI Policy Workshop Preconference in Albuquerque took place on Thursday, June 22, the day before the start of the SPSSI Conference.
