Call for Nominations: Forward Newsletter Editor
(September 2020 – September 2023)
Deadline: May 1, 2020
Nominations are now being sought for an editorial position for SPSSI’s Forward Newsletter. SPSSI is a professional community of scientists from psychology and related fields who share a common interest in applying psychological theory and practice to social issues and problems involving persons, communities, groups, and nations. This position should be an excellent introduction to editor roles, therefore late-early to mid-career scholars are particularly invited to apply as well as those who are under-represented minorities or international scholars.
The Project: Forward is SPSSI’s newsletter. It is an official publication of the Society. The editor is appointed by the President for a three-year term. The newsletter is available electronically to all SPSSI members and to the general public.
The Mission: Three newsletters are published per year, normally a Winter, Spring and Summer edition. Regular features include columns by the Forward Editor, SPSSI President, Central Office staff, and by the editors of each of SPSSI’s journals. Goals of the publication include:
- The newsletter is used to disseminate administrative announcements, including reports of council meetings, annual budget, new initiatives, information about SPSSI’s annual conference, and similar material.
- The newsletter can stimulate greater member involvement in SPSSI by providing a forum for the expression of member opinion and points of view on matters of general interest. This can be accomplished by publishing accounts of members’ activities concerning social issues, letters to the Editor, and articles by members;
- The newsletter can stimulate research by carrying information about the availability of research grants, the names of grant recipients, with the titles of their projects and brief, informal progress reports or notes about their research.
- A final goal of the newsletter is to retain and attract members to SPSSI by alerting newsletter readers to the diverse activities in which SPSSI is engaged.
Editorial Tenure and skills: The Editor is responsible for the newsletter content, including soliciting, rejecting, and editing newsletter copy to conform to the newsletter purposes stated above; approving production arrangements made by Central Office staff; and attending semi-annual Council meetings as a non-voting member.
How to apply: Nominations (self-nomination and otherwise) are welcome—please type “Newsletter Editor Search” in the subject line of your email to Anila Balkissoon, SPSSI Executive Director (abalkissoon@spssi.org) not later than May 1, 2020. In the case of self-nominations candidates should email a copy of their CV, and a brief statement describing their interest in and vision for this project. Contact information for two referees may be requested. Review of applications will be on a rolling basis and will continue until the position is filled. Any questions with regard to the role of The Forward editor may be referred to SPSSI's current editor, Ashley Votruba (ashley.votruba@unl.edu).
