The weather is warming and we are looking forward to our first in-person conference in two years. As we reflect on the tumult of the past few years, I am reminded of the important work that those in the SPSSI community have continued to pursue amidst the chaos and disruption. Throughout this issue, we see examples of a continuing commitment to apply theory and practice to important social problems.

This issue of The Forward highlights the policy work of SPSSI in the community through publications and grants. SPSSI President Linda Silka discusses her efforts to engage with SPSSI stakeholders around the country and looks forward to our upcoming conference. Ann Bettencourt and Michael Zárate provide an overview of the latest issue of Social Issues and Policy Review. We also receive reports on the continuing efforts of SPSSI Committees, including:

  • Ashley Votruba provides an update on future plans for the Communications Committee, discusses the Sound Science, Sound Policy Blog, and solicits new members.
  • Anjali Dutt and Darlingtina Esiaka explore the ongoing work by the Internationalization Committee to sponsor research in the Global South.
  • The Graduate Student Committee officers discuss their preconference at the 2022 SPSSI Summer Conference.

Additionally, this issue highlights the winners of SPSSI’s State and Local Policy Awards. We invited the winners to submit articles on their research and activism, including:

  • Jane Leer, Zoelene Hill, Imari Z. Smith, Karen Carmody, & Lisa A. Genettian: Studying Context, Interrogating Structural Discrimination to Improve the Reach and Equitable Delivery of Universal Home Visiting Models
  • Jakob Schneider & Hayoung Jeong: Public Land for People, Not Policing: Developing Policy Pathways for Reparative Justice through Community-Based Research
  • Carlie Trott: A Multi-Phase Approach to Equity-Driven Climate Policy Planning in Cincinnati: Centering Neighborhood-level Perspectives

Lastly, we feature updates on our upcoming summer conference, including announcements from coordinators Eduardo Lugo-Hernández, Kala Melchiori, and Souhail Malavé-Rivera and a preview from Michael Hogg of the 2022 Kurt Lewin Address.
